Turf Laying in Ballarat.

Real lawn, prepped properly, rolled in tight and levelled so it looks like it has always been there.

Turf Laying in Ballarat

A lawn is only ever as good as what sits under it. We spray out the old grass, rotary hoe or scrape it back, remove the spoil, then bring in a sandy loam and grade it so there are no low spots holding water and no crown running toward the house.

The slabs go down staggered and butted tight, edges cut in clean around beds and paths, then the whole lot gets rolled and given a first deep water. You get a watering schedule for the first three weeks, which is the part that decides whether it takes.

Tall Fescue is the pick for most Ballarat blocks. It handles our frosts, stays green through winter and copes with shade better than a warm-season grass. Sir Walter Buffalo suits a yard with kids and dogs, and Couch or Kikuyu is the cheaper hard-wearing option for full sun.

Questions

The things people ask us.

What is the best turf for Ballarat?

Tall Fescue for most yards. It stays green through a Ballarat winter, handles frost and tolerates part shade. Sir Walter is the better call if the lawn cops heavy foot traffic from kids or dogs.

When is the best time to lay turf?

Spring and autumn are ideal. We lay all year round, it just means more watering in summer and slower establishment in the middle of winter.

How long until I can walk on it?

Light foot traffic after about a week, normal use after three to four weeks once the roots have knitted into the soil.
