Plenty of Ballarat blocks fall away, and a retaining wall is often the thing that makes a backyard usable. The failures we get called to are almost always drainage. Water builds up behind a wall with nowhere to go and pushes it over.

So every wall we build gets ag-pipe on a gravel bed behind it, wrapped in geotextile, running to a legal point of discharge. Posts go into concrete footings dug to depth, sleepers are hardwood, treated pine or galvanised steel depending on the look and the height, and the whole thing is set to string line so the courses run true.

For anything over a metre or near a boundary we will let you know if it needs engineering and a permit, before quoting rather than after.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

In most Victorian council areas a wall under one metre that is not carrying a load or sitting on a boundary does not need a permit. Above that it usually does, along with engineering. We will flag it during the quote.

Timber or block?

Treated pine sleepers are the cost-effective option and look right in a garden setting. Besser or link block lasts longer and suits a rendered modern finish. Steel sleepers sit in between and give a sharp clean line.
